People with diabetes are more likely to develope eye problems such as cataracts and glaucoma. However, the disease's effect on the retina is the main threat to vision. Damage to the retina, called diabetic retinopathy, is a disease that can cause partial vision loss or complete blindness. According to the National Eye Institute, nearly half of those who have diabetes will develope some degree of diabetic retinopathy during their lifetime. Warning Signs: Vison loss can be frightening, but there are treatments available. If retinopathy is detected before major damage is done, laser treatment may be used to control the disease. Cataract surgery at the Eye Center of Texas by Dr. Edward Wade or Dr. Mark Mayo is a painless and pleasant experience. When a cataract becomes dense enough so that it interferes with your daily living, we discuss the option of cataract surgery. Cataract surgery takes about 10 minutes and patients return to the comfort of their home the very same day. There is little to no pain and Dr. Wade and Dr. Mayo do not use painful injections, stitches or even an eye patch after surgery. Patients stay in their own clothes for comfort and receive IV sedation so that they are comfortable during the procedure. Patients have a choice in intraocular lens implants lenses or IOLs that are used to restore their vision. The standard lens we use is the monofocal which corrects distance vision. With this lens, patients still need glasses for reading. If patients have a desire to see without glasses, we offer the ReSTOR IOL. This premium implant allows patients to see near, far and everything in between without glasses or with a limited use of glasses. You do not have to choose one of these implants, but if you desire less dependence on glasses, they are a wonderful way to achieve it. The ReSTOR intraocular lens implant requires an extra charge, but this cost can be financed through Care Credit. Our patients love the ability to spread the cost over years without incurring expensive financing charges. Call us today at 713-797-1010. 06/04/10
Luckily for baby boomers…there’s been a revolutionary advancement for people over the age of 50 who wear reading glasses and/or bifocals. Dr. Edward C. Wade, Chief Surgeon at the Eye Center of Texas is one of the surgeons in Houston to offer the ReSTOR intraocular lens (IOL) to patients (with or without cataracts) looking to rid themselves of reading glasses and/or bifocals. Today, the majority of patients who undergo cataract surgery receive monofocal lenses, which typically require them to use reading glasses or bifocals for near vision following surgery. “With the ReSTOR IOL, patients with or without a cataract have the potential to reduce their reliance on glasses”, said Dr. Wade. “This lens is a breakthrough in cataract surgery that we are proud to offer our patients.” A cataract is a “clouding” of the eye’s natural lens, which results in blurred or defocused vision. According to a recent article published in the Archives of Ophthalmology, more than 20 million adults in the U.S. have developed cataracts making it the number one cause of poor vision in the United States. While not all cataracts require surgery, nearly 3 million cataract procedures are annually performed in the U.S. Cataracts cannot be prevented and are the leading cause of treatable blindness worldwide. According to the National Eye Institute, the number of Americans with cataracts is expected to rise to over 30 million people by the year 2020. “They say 50 is the new 30…and patients don’t want to give-away their age by wearing reading glasses and/or bifocals”, according to Wade. “With the ReSTOR IOL, patients over the age of 50 can experience a full range of high-quality vision without the need for glasses. The range of vision is achieved without glasses through the optical properties of the IOL. Dr. Edward C. Wade of the Eye Center of Texas is one of the top ReSTOR IOL surgeons in the country. Have you been told you’re not a candidate for LASIK? Good News…patients who are not good candidates for LASIK may have the option of having the Visian ICL procedure. The Visian ICL is the latest new vision care technology for people who are moderately to severely nearsighted. The Visian, by Staar Surgical, received FDA approval in December 2005. Dr. Edward Wade was one of the first in Texas to offer the Visian ICL. The Visian ICL procedure is an outpatient procedure. Dr. Wade will surgically insert the Visian ICL between the iris and the natural lens of the eye. The procedure takes about 15 minutes for each eye and only requires a topical anesthesia. Vision is normally restored within a few hours after surgery. The Visian ICL will stay in place indefinitely and should require no maintenance. How effective is the Visian ICL for improving vision? A U.S. FDA clinical trial of 294 patients showed excellent results three years after implantation with the Visian ICL: • 95% of patients achieved 20/40 eyesight or better without glasses or contact lenses, allowing them to drive a car without the need for corrective eyewear Just as important, the Visian has a good track record for safety. The lens has been successfully inserted in more than 45,000 eyes worldwide. It is now available in the U.S. and Europe through selected eye surgeons. Check out the links from Fox News and Channel 13.
