Cataract surgery at the Eye Center of Texas by Dr. Edward Wade or Dr. Mark Mayo is a painless and pleasant experience. When a cataract becomes dense enough so that it interferes with your daily living, we discuss the option of cataract surgery. Cataract surgery takes about 10 minutes and patients return to the comfort of their home the very same day. There is little to no pain and Dr. Wade and Dr. Mayo do not use painful injections, stitches or even an eye patch after surgery. Patients stay in their own clothes for comfort and receive IV sedation so that they are comfortable during the procedure.

Patients have a choice in intraocular lens implants lenses or IOLs that are used to restore their vision. The standard lens we use is the monofocal which corrects distance vision. With this lens, patients still need glasses for reading. If patients have a desire to see without glasses, we offer the ReSTOR IOL. This premium implant allows patients to see near, far and everything in between without glasses or with a limited use of glasses. You do not have to choose one of these implants, but if you desire less dependence on glasses, they are a wonderful way to achieve it.

The ReSTOR intraocular lens implant requires an extra charge, but this cost can be financed through Care Credit. Our patients love the ability to spread the cost over years without incurring expensive financing charges.

Luckily for baby boomers…there’s been a revolutionary advancement for people over the age of 50 who wear reading glasses and/or bifocals. Dr. Edward C. Wade, Chief Surgeon at the Eye Center of Texas is one of the surgeons in Houston to offer the ReSTOR intraocular lens (IOL) to patients (with or without cataracts) looking to rid themselves of reading glasses and/or bifocals.

Today, the majority of patients who undergo cataract surgery receive monofocal lenses, which typically require them to use reading glasses or bifocals for near vision following surgery.

“With the ReSTOR IOL, patients with or without a cataract have the potential to reduce their reliance on glasses”, said Dr. Wade. “This lens is a breakthrough in cataract surgery that we are proud to offer our patients.”

A cataract is a “clouding” of the eye’s natural lens, which results in blurred or defocused vision. According to a recent article published in the Archives of Ophthalmology, more than 20 million adults in the U.S. have developed cataracts making it the number one cause of poor vision in the United States. While not all cataracts require surgery, nearly 3 million cataract procedures are annually performed in the U.S. Cataracts cannot be prevented and are the leading cause of treatable blindness worldwide. According to the National Eye Institute, the number of Americans with cataracts is expected to rise to over 30 million people by the year 2020.

“They say 50 is the new 30…and patients don’t want to give-away their age by wearing reading glasses and/or bifocals”, according to Wade. “With the ReSTOR IOL, patients over the age of 50 can experience a full range of high-quality vision without the need for glasses. The range of vision is achieved without glasses through the optical properties of the IOL.

Dr. Edward C. Wade of the Eye Center of Texas is one of the top ReSTOR IOL surgeons in the country. If you have or think you have a cataract, please call the Eye Center of Texas at 713-797-1010. If you don’t have a cataract and you would like to find out if you are a candidate for the ReSTOR IOL, please call 713-797-1010.

Cataract Surgery is an amazing and modern procedure – that only takes a few minutes. Dr. Edward Wade and Dr. Mark Mayo perform cataract surgery through a small incision with no sutures, injections or even an eye patch. Cataract surgery is not painful – we keep our patients comfortable by using IV sedation and numbing eye drops… and our cataract patients are able to return home the same day of surgery. In most cases, our patients are able to see through their eye immediately.

Most of our cataract patients are referred to us by their optometrist or other patients – which just goes to show that our practice is built on reputation and trust.
So what is the greatest part about cataract surgery? I think one of the greatest advances available to our cataract doctors is the ability to offer patients premium intraocular lenses or IOLs. Multifocal implants are designed to make patients less dependent on glasses for far and near and everything in between. The ReSTOR IOL, is a favorite of Dr. Wade and Dr. Mayo. As a matter of fact, Dr. Wade is one of the top ReSTOR surgeons in the country. Our patients have also enjoyed our use of the toric implant to reduce or eliminate the need for astigmatism. If a laser vision correction touch up is needed for the best result, we provide iLASIK bladeless custom LASIK at no additional charge.

At the Eye Center of Texas, we take care of all eye problems including macular degeneration, diabetic eye disease and retinopathy, lid problems, dry eyes and we specialize in laser vision correction and cataract surgery. As we age, our bodies undergo many changes. One significant change that causes frustration for people is the gradual loss of near vision that usually starts in the early to middle 40’s and gets progressively worse until the middle to late 50’s. This normal and unavoidable effect of aging is called presbyopia. Presbyopia arises due to changes in the lens of the eye. Like in a camera the lens of the eye is responsible for adjusting focus. When we are young, we can easily change focus to look at objects that are nearby or far away. This is because, our lens is young and soft, and can quickly, and easily, change its shape to accommodate between distance and near focus. But as we age, the lens becomes stiff and can no longer easily change its shape. As a result, we can no longer adjust our focus to see up close without some help. Help for presbyopia comes in several forms…reading glasses (readers…cheaters) bifocals; mono-vision contacts; mono-vision LASIK correction and the latest…Multifocal Intraocular Lens (IOL). IOL’s correct your distance vision...mid range vision... and your reading vision. Patients that have had this procedure say it's like turning back the clock.

Dr. Edward Wade and Dr. Mark Mayo are extremely experienced with the ReSTOR IOL; in fact Dr. Wade is one of the top 10 ReSTOR surgeons in the U.S. and has more experience with the ReSTOR lens than any surgeon in the Houston area.

Call the Eye Center of Texas at 713-395-1515 to ask about our free multifocal IOL evaluation. The Eye Center of Texas has offices in Houston/Bellaire; Pasadena; Clear Lake; South East Houston; Sugar Land and Katy.
