One of the first questions people ask when considering LASIK is…”what is the cost”? At the Eye Center of Texas, we recognize that cost is an important factor, but when it’s all said and done…shouldn’t the LASIK surgeon and his/her success rate be the most important thing one should consider when thinking about LASIK?

Dr. Edward Wade of the Eye Center of Texas has been in private practice since 1989. LASIK vision correction has changed over the last few years. When Dr. Edward Wade of the Eye Center of Texas started doing LASIK over 19 years ago, we used metal microkeratomes (blades) to create flaps. Today, Dr. Wade only offers the IntraLase (blade-free) method for creating flaps in the superficial layers of the cornea. The Intralase method is the safest and most precise way to make flaps in the cornea. Additionally, we only offer the Advanced CustomVue Wavefront-guided VISX excimer laser technology to reshape the underlying cornea. Your fingerprint is unique to you as your visual system is and the laser creates a custom fingerprint of your visual system. The laser vision correction ablation automatically centers and automatically tracks the eye and shuts off automatically is there is movement. With iLASIK, there is iris registration. With iris registration, the laser looks at pinpoint areas of the iris and centers the laser vision correction on those specific areas. Bladeless Custom LASIK with iris registration is called ‘iLASIK’ and is the most progressive and advanced way to perform LASIK.

Among Dr. Wade’s numerous recognitions, VISX named him one of the ‘Top 100 LASIK surgeons in the U.S.’ and he is presently one of a select number of surgeons in Houston that offer “Intacs” for Keratoconus and “ICL”s; procedures for extremely nearsighted people who are not candidates for LASIK eye correction. Personally, I don't know much about this procedure...but please stay tuned...because I will report back with more information about this revolutionary procedure.

Have you been told you’re not a candidate for LASIK? Good News…patients who are not good candidates for LASIK may have the option of having the Visian ICL procedure. The Visian ICL is the latest new vision care technology for people who are moderately to severely nearsighted. The Visian, by Staar Surgical, received FDA approval in December 2005. Dr. Edward Wade was one of the first in Texas to offer the Visian ICL.

The Visian ICL procedure is an outpatient procedure. Dr. Wade will surgically insert the Visian ICL between the iris and the natural lens of the eye. The procedure takes about 15 minutes for each eye and only requires a topical anesthesia. Vision is normally restored within a few hours after surgery. The Visian ICL will stay in place indefinitely and should require no maintenance.

How effective is the Visian ICL for improving vision? A U.S. FDA clinical trial of 294 patients showed excellent results three years after implantation with the Visian ICL:

• 95% of patients achieved 20/40 eyesight or better without glasses or contact lenses, allowing them to drive a car without the need for corrective eyewear
• 92% reported they were very satisfied or extremely satisfied with the improvement to their eyesight.

Just as important, the Visian has a good track record for safety. The lens has been successfully inserted in more than 45,000 eyes worldwide. It is now available in the U.S. and Europe through selected eye surgeons.
