Diabetes is a common disease in the United States, and diabetic eye disease is one of the most common cause of blindness in the United States. Regular eye examinations are important for patients with diabetes because diabetic eye disease and the vision loss caused by it are preventable. In diabetes, high sugar levels in the blood damage blood vessels throughout the entire body. Your eyes also have many blood vessels in it, and diabetes can also damage those blood vessels. In particular, high blood glucose levels cause damage to the blood vessels in the retina of the eye. Diabetic retinopathy has no symptoms. The only way to know if you have these changes and need treatment to save your sight is to visit your eye doctor regularly. People with diabetes should have their eyes examined at least once a year to make sure they do not have early damage that threatens their vision.

If you have diabetes, call the Eye Center of Texas at 713-797-1010 for an appointment with Ting Fang-Suarez,M.D., F.A.C.S. Dr. Suarez is a board certified ophthalmologist specializing in vitreo-retinal disease and surgery. Now there is an alternative! Selective Laser Trabeculoplasty (SLT) is a non-destructive laser that allows 80% of people to eliminate their glaucoma medication if their intra-ocular pressures (IOPs) were controlled on 1 drop. For people who require multiple drops we can eliminate 1 of the drops by doing the SLT. This allows for better compliance with treatment and makes the treatment of glaucoma much easier and more convenient for patients by eliminating the daily use of drops. Also, many people with glaucoma also have dry eye syndrome which can be made worse by the preservatives in glaucoma medications.
SLT is a 5 minute in office procedure that is painless and is effective within 6 weeks after treatment. It is an insurance covered expense making the treatment of glaucoma much more affordable for our patients. Call Eye Center of Texas today for an evaluation 713 797-1010.

Categories: Cataract

One of the natural changes that occurs as we get older is a gradual decline in the clarity of our vision. A common age-related condition is cataracts, which left untreated, can eventually rob you of your vision.

A cataract gradually clouds the lens, letting less light through and leaving your vision blurry and dull. Cataracts can be successfully treated with surgery and it's one of the most effective and safe surgeries you can have.

Dr. Edward Wade, of the Eye Center of Texas will make a tiny incision in your cornea... carefully remove your old, damaged lens and replace it with an intraocular lens (IOL). It's that simple. But prior to cataract surgery, the Eye Center of Texas will work with you to help decide what kind of IOL is right for you. The latest innovation in IOL are lenses that not only correct cataracts, but in many cases eliminate your need for glasses altogether. In most cases, Dr. Wade will recommend Alcon's AcrySof IQ ReSTOR lenses.

The AcrySof IQ ReSTOR IOL is a multifocal lens (different from older, monofocal lenses that were designed to correct cataracts - along with one type of vision problem, typically distance vision). With the ReSTOR IOL, you will be able to focus on things close up, far away, and in-between. You'll actually regain you ability to quickly change focus.

My neighbor recently had cataract surgery with Dr. Wade and decided on the AcrySof IQ ReSTOR lens. Now she can see life in beautiful detail again -near, far and everything in-between.

So you’re thinking about having LASIK Eye Correction? GREAT…now go do your homework. The first thing to research is the surgeon. How many LASIK procedures has he/she performed? The second thing is technology (for instance…many surgeons still create their patients flap with the microkeratome (blade) system. Last, but not least is… price (many people put price over surgeon and technology).

The Surgeon: Dr. Edward Wade of the Eye Center of Texas is one of the top LASIK surgeons in the country. He has performed over 40,000 LASIK procedures and is considered “the doctors…doctor” – meaning more Houston doctors refer their patients to him than any other LASIK surgeon. And…he is known for correcting other LASIK surgeon’s mistakes. He is also one of a select number of surgeons in Houston that offers the Visian ICL procedure – a procedure for extremely nearsighted people that probably are not candidates for LASIK.

Technology: Many LASIK surgeons in the Houston area are still using metal microkeratomes (blades) to make flaps. The difficulty with flaps being make with microkeratomes - is the chance of a significant complication is much greater than with the IntraLase (blade free) method for creating flaps. Dr. Wade used the blade microkeratomes for many years, but as soon as a safer and more precise technology was available, he changed over. Now, all our flaps made during the iLASIK procedure are blade free IntraLase. Dr. Wade loves the safety and exact nature of the blade free flap making experience.

Additionally, some Houston LASIK surgeons are still doing non custom LASIK procedures. At the Eye Center of Texas we only offer the Advanced CustomVue Wavefront–guided VISX excimer laser technology for a truly customized experience. When you match the IntraLase method with the CustomVue Wavefront laser vision correction procedure, you get the absolute best results. iLASIK is the latest and most advanced LASIK procedure available - and it’s the only technology the Eye Center of Texas offers.

Price: If you check around, you will find that we are not the most expensive…but then we are not the cheapest. We are right in line with the other reputable Houston LASIK surgeons…but in addition to having surgery by Dr. Wade, one of the top LASIK surgeons in the county – you will receive a ‘limited lifetime warranty’. Very few LASIK surgeons offer this. And if you need a little help with payments, you may want to consider Care Credit Financing. This makes it easier for those patients that would like to ease the burden of payment.
