Are you over 40… have blurry near vision...Welcome to Presbyopia As we age, our bodies undergo many changes. One significant change that causes concern for people is the gradual loss of near vision that usually starts in the early to middle 40’s and gets progressively worse until the middle to late 50’s. This normal and unavoidable effect of aging is called presbyopia. Presbyopia arises due to changes in the lens of the eye. Like in a camera the lens of the eye is responsible for adjusting focus. When we are young, we can easily change focus to look at objects that are nearby or far away. This is because, our lens is young and soft, and can quickly, and easily, change its shape to accommodate between distance and near focus. But as we age, the lens becomes stiff and can no longer easily change its shape. As a result, we can no longer adjust our focus to see up close without some help. Help for presbyopia comes in several forms…reading glasses (readers…cheaters) bifocals; mono-vision contacts; mono-vision LASIK correction and the latest…Multifocal Intraocular Lens (IOL). IOL’s correct both your far-away vision (even if you’ve worn glasses and/or contacts most of your life) and your reading vision. It’s literally like turning back the clock. Dr. Edward Wade and Dr. Mark Mayo are extremely experienced with the ReSTOR IOL; in fact Dr. Wade is one of the top 20 ReSTOR surgeons in the U.S. and has more experience with the ReSTOR lens than any surgeon in the Houston area. Call the Eye Center of Texas at 713-395-1515 to ask about our free multifocal IOL evaluations. The Eye Center of Texas has offices in Houston/Bellaire; Pasadena; Clear Lake; South East Houston; Sugar Land and Katy If you have cataracts, even very early cataracts, you may still be a great candidate for the multifocal IOL’s. Glaucoma is a leading cause of blindness. It is estimated that over two million Americans have some type of glaucoma and half of them do not know it, missing the opportunity to seek treatment. The tendency to get glaucoma increases with age therefore it is more common in older individuals, but it can also occur in younger people. Unfortunately, the common kinds of glaucoma have no early symptoms. Once loss of vision is noticed by a patient, the damage is usually very severe and irreversible. Elevated pressure cannot be felt unless the pressure is very high. In order to preserve vision, glaucoma must be diagnosed early. All it takes is a simple test performed by your Optometrist during your routine eye exam. Glaucoma is a lifelong disease, but can be controlled with the right glaucoma treatment. It is important that we all have a comprehensive annual eye exam. While the doctors at the Eye Center of Texas do not offer annual eye exams, we are affiliated with over 300 of the best Optometrist in Houston and will be happy to help you find an Optometrist in your area. We strongly recommend these select Optometrists to our patients and to the public for the full scope of services provided in their offices, including: comprehensive eye exams, therapeutic treatment of eye disease, the management of glaucoma, pre & post-op care of cataracts and LASIK, glasses, contact lenses, children’s eye care and low vision services. One of the most rewarding surgeries I do is the Visian Intraocular Contact Lens (ICL). Don't get me wrong Lasik is awesome, but with the ICL we can correct people's vision who are too near-sighted to have Lasik. People who can't even see the big "E" on the eye chart can have the ICL implanted in both eyes and 30 minutes later can see well enough to drive (although with the Valium they take before the surgery someone needs to drive them home).
