The Multifocal Intraocular Lens

As we age our eyes lose their ability to change focus and adjust from viewing something far away to something up close. Multifocal lenses are designed to provide a full range of clear, sharp vision. These lenses can correct for nearsightedness, farsightedness, and presbyopia. In fact, 4 out of 5 patients reported complete freedom from glasses.  When you opt for cataract surgery, you’re opting for freedom from both cataracts and presbyopia at the same time.

Who Is A Good Candidate for Multifocal Intraocular Lens?

Virtually everyone who has cataracts and/or presbyopia and is in good general health may be a candidate for cataract surgery using the multifocal intraocular lens. During your cataract evaluation, we will determine if there are any pre-existing conditions that would make lens replacement surgery not advisable.

If you are a patient who will have to rely on reading glasses or bifocals after your cataract surgery you may want to consider the multifocal intraocular lens. It is important that you speak with one of our experienced counselors to determine your vision expectations after surgery. Although insurance generally covers monofocal implants, it does not cover multifocal lenses, however, we offer many attractive financing options through Care Credit.

Clinical Results

Results from a controlled clinical study revealed that maximum visual performance is achieved when the lens is implanted in both eyes. Benefits are apparent with individuals in whom the lens is used in only one eye as well. Clinical data demonstrates that the lens greatly reduces dependence on glasses or bifocals:

• 80% of patients reported that after lens implant surgery, they never needed glasses or contact lenses to see clearly at all distances near, far and in-between.
• 99% of patients could see well enough to drive a car without glasses or contacts
• 97% of patients could read the newspaper without reading glasses or bifocals
• 90% of patients could shave or put on makeup without glasses or contacts
• 80% of patients NEVER wear glasses for any activities

Everyone’s focusing ability is different. Most people will be able to see clearly in the distance, have a very good reading vision and functional intermediate vision without glasses, but some people may be more comfortable with additional correction, particularly at night or in dim light or for long periods of computer work. After surgery, it may be necessary for some people to wear glasses for distance, intermediate and/or near vision to obtain optimal visual acuity. The difference from standard lenses is that most people will not be as dependent on these supplemental vision aids to function normally.
