What to Expect With LASIK
LASIK is short for Laser-Assisted In Situ Keratomileusis. It’s a refractive laser eye procedure that uses a femtosecond laser and an excimer laser to reshape your cornea and correct refractive errors. These include farsightedness, astigmatism, and nearsightedness.
LASIK is an outpatient procedure that takes less than an hour to perform. If you’re nervous, your LASIK surgeon at Eye Center of Texas will offer you a sedative.
Before LASIK begins, your LASIK surgeon will administer numbing eye drops to ensure you don’t feel any discomfort. After these numbing eye drops disperse over the surface of your eye, your LASIK surgeon will use a femtosecond laser to create a flap in the outer layer of your eye.
They then open the flap to reach your cornea. They will carefully reshape the cornea using an excimer laser and gently close the flap back over your eye. The flap will heal without stitches.
Most patients start noticing almost immediate visual improvements after LASIK. As the numbing eye drops start wearing off in the hours after the procedure, you may notice your eyes feel sore and gritty.
These side effects should wear off after a day or two. You’ll use prescription eye drops to help reduce inflammation and the chance of infection. You’ll also need to refrain from strenuous activities while your eyes heal.
In the days and weeks after LASIK, your vision will continue improving, with most patients achieving their peak vision 3-6 months after having LASIK.
Are You Ready for LASIK?

The exam includes producing a digital 3D map of your eyes so your surgeon can create a custom treatment plan for each of your eyes. You may be a good candidate for LASIK if you’re at least 18, have a stable prescription that’s remained unchanged for a year or more, and have thick enough corneas to undergo the procedure.
