There are, however, a few general LASIK vision correction candidate requirements that hold true for almost everyone. Generally, candidates for LASIK must:

• Be at least 18 years old: Perhaps the most well known of all the laser surgery requirements is age. Because the eyes develop right up into early adulthood, LASIK eye surgeons almost always require that their patients be at least 18 years old to be considered for the procedure.
• Have good eye health and overall health: If you’re wondering “Am I a candidate for LASIK?” then another good question to ask yourself is “Am I healthy?” In order to be a candidate for LASIK eye surgery, it’s vastly preferred that patients do not have diabetes or any autoimmune or vascular diseases. Your eye health must also be in good standing. Doctors prefer for your eyesight to have remained stable for at least one year.
• Have enough corneal thickness: LASIK eye surgery requires that your doctor use a laser to create a corneal flap before he or she can fix the imperfections in your eyes. Because of the nature of this procedure, your corneas must be a minimum of 0.5 mm thick for you to be considered a potential LASIK candidate.
• Be neither pregnant nor nursing – There are certain LASIK prescriptions that pregnant or nursing women may not be able to take due to their possible effect on hormones. However, these patients will likely be candidates for LASIK after a set amount of time post-nursing.
